Grièvement blessé au Champ d'honneur à Lessines le 4 septembre 1944, décédé à la clinique d'Ath le 23 janvier 1945 des suites de ses blessures. Plus d'infos/Meer info: Son of Samuel Newland, and of Honor Mary Newland, of Leverstock Green, Hertfordshire. Age at death: 32. Corporal. Service Number 5957889. Dorsetshire Regiment. John was motorcyclist, he was killed by a German grenade. A commitment opposed 250 Germans posted along the boulevard of Lessines, at crossing road of Wannebecq, to the local resistance (group G, AS IF and PA). The British tanks were called in from the road Frasne and the road of l'Abattoir. Equipped with an anti-aircraft gun, about 15 Germans, a resistant PA (Augustine FIERON) and John were killed. This spot is not far of John's grave. Cemetery: Lessines, HT, BE, new communal cemetery, plot A, grave 8 (Sources [79], [526])
