In 1929 nam hij dienst bij de Militaire Luchtvaart waar hij deel zou uitmaken van de 60e Promotie. In 1931 wordt hij gebreveteerd militair piloot. Hij vervoegt het 1e luchtvaartregiment te Goetsenhoven en volgt luchtvaartschool te Evere. Hij wordt onderluitenant en muteert naar het 2de jachtregiment te Nijvel. De Hemptinne volgt een cursus instructeur en muteert naar Goetsenhoven. In februari 1940 wordt hij aangeduid als adjunct van de bevelhebber van de vliegschool te Sint- Denijs-Westrem. Kort na de Duitse inval vlucht hij met de school naar Marokko, via Oujda-Casablanca en Gibraltar arriveert hij op 17 juli 1940 te Liverpool. Hij volgt een opleiding bij 6 OTU (Operational Training Unit) en met het 145 Sqn neemt hij deel aan de Battle of Britain. Op 16 juni 1941 wordt hij overgeplaatst naar het 609 Sqn Na bewogen passage via het 131 en 64 Sqn, belandt Fl/Ltn DE HEMPTINNE eind augustus, begin september 1941 bij het 122 Sqn Op 5 mei 1942 wordt hij tijdens Circus 157 dodelijk gewond en sterft aan DE WULF hoeve in Dranouter, WV, BE na een ultieme noodlanding. Hij was 32 jaar. DE HEMPTINNE werd eerst begraven op het Ypres Town Cemetery Extension (langs de Zonnebeekseweg, naast het gemeentekerkhof van Ieper – graf 43). Op vrijdag 27 augustus 1948 werd Fl/Ltn DE HEMPTINNE ontgraven op het Ieperse kerkhof en overgebracht naar het Erekerkhof van de Belgische Piloten te Evere. In graf 28 krijgt hij een laatste rustplaats. Tijdens Circus 157 vloog de Hemptinne als sectieleider van Blue Section met Spitfire Vb BM321 MT-T. De Promotie Leerling-Piloten 84B (vleugeluitreiking van 5 september 1986) droeg de naam van Kapitein Vlieger DE HEMPTINNE (Bron [241]). DE HEMPTINNE joined the Belgian Air Force on 30th September 1929 as one of the 60th intake. He qualified as a pilot in 1931 and at the beginning of 1933 was serving with the 5th Squadron of the 3rd Group of the 1st Regiment flying the Fairey Fox. He was then injured in some way in May 1933 and spent the rest of that year convalescing, returning to the 5th Squadron in April 1936. On 26th December 1936 he was posted to the 2nd Regiment at Nivelles. At this time he qualified as an instructor and in February 1940 was posted as deputy commander of the flying school in Saint-Denis-Westrem. Shortly after the German invasion the school was evacuated to Oudja in French Morocco. After the fall of France DE HEMPTINNE and many other Belgian airmen decided to escape to England, arriving in Liverpool on 17th July 1940 via Casablanca and Gibraltar. He was commissioned in the RAF and went to 6 OTU at Sutton Bridge on 30th July. He converted to Hurricanes and was posted to 145 Squadron at Drem in Scotland on 17th August. He attacked a He115 over a convoy on 2nd October, it landed on the sea off Kinnairds Head and the crew were rescued and taken prisoner. On 25th October his engine failed and he force-landed on Haywards Heath golf course, the aircraft exploded just after he got out. On 16th June 1941 he transferred to 609 Squadron at Biggin Hill. He was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre (gazetted 21st July 1941). DE HEMPTINNE went on to serve for short periods with 131 and 64 squadrons, this was followed by a posting to 122 Squadron on 30th July 1941. 122 Squadron was detailed, along with 64 and 313 Squadrons, to escort Bostons of 226 Squadron when they attacked Lille on 5th May 1942 (Circus 157). The formation was attacked on the return journey by Fw190’s from JG26. Five Spitfires were shot down. DE HEMPTINNE, in Spitfire Vb MT-T BM321, was one of them. Although shot in the back he was able to crash-land his aircraft on the DE WULF farm near Dranouter. However by the time local people arrived he was dead. The Germans buried him at an extension to the British War Cemetery at Ypres, but because DE HEMPTINNE carried no identification (in case this led to persecution of his Belgian family) he was buried as an unknown airman. He was 32 years old. On 27th August 1948 his body was exhumed, identified and transferred to the Belgian airmens "Pelouse d’Honneur" at Evere, Brussels. A memorial to him was unveiled in Dranouter, WV, BE in 1992.
